British Friends of ZAKA was formed in 2003, during the height of the intifada, to help raise awareness – and funds - for the sacred work carried out by ZAKA volunteers in Israel. British Friends of ZAKA, with offices located in Golders Green, consists of a board of directors, headed by Trustees Herbert and Flora Frank and Executive Director David Rose.
In May 2005, Lady Jacobovits accepted an invitation to become the first patron of the British Friends of ZAKA with the comment: "I am humbly proud to be asked to support ZAKA. All Jews, the world over, are thankful and so proud for ZAKA's work in Israel. ZAKA never hesitates to respond to any emergency anywhere in the world when asked to do so. Hence ZAKA is a shining example of the very best mankind has to offer."
Other patrons include Mr. Conrad Morris and the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, who praised ZAKA for their sacred work: "The work of ZAKA, painful, difficult, yet immensely humane, has been one of the great forms of Kiddush Hashem (sanctifying God's name) in our time. By refusing to let terror robs its victims of their final dignity in death, they have been a witness to the sanctity of life. We salute the tireless efforts of ZAKA's volunteers in Israel and elsewhere. Their work deserves the highest praise and our generous support."
Since 2003, British Friends of ZAKA has raised thousands of pounds for the Israel-based humanitarian organisation , thanks to the generous support of individual donors, synagogues, schools and foundations. Donations include three fully-equipped ambulances, one from the Woodside Park Synagogue; 22 Rapid Rescue motorcycles; equipment for the ZAKA Divers' Unit, the ZAKA team in Sderot and a major campaign during the Second Lebanon War to provide essential supplies for the North.
If you are interested in establishing a regional branch of British Friends of ZAKA, or initiating a donation drive in your synagogue, school or community, please contact the British Friends of ZAKA.
