Yehuda Meshi-Zahav Letter

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the website of the British Friends of ZAKA, which will give you a glimpse into the important, sacred work of ZAKA in Israel and overseas and regular updates on our activities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your generous support for our organisation in the past. Your financial support is important to us and serves as a significant morale boost that gives us renewed energy to continue in our work.

Today, the ZAKA organisation has over 1500 volunteers dispersed throughout Israel, on alert, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During 2007, the organisation dealt with 2,126 events of sudden death - the result of fatal traffic accidents, suicide, murder, disasters and terror attacks – and, in contrast, 18,824 life-saving incidents, including search and rescue, many of them in Sderot and the Gaza periphery. All this in addition to providing assistance during international disasters such as the plane crashes in Thailand and Namibia and the dispatch of the Divers Unit to locate and retrieve the body of an Israeli diplomat feared drowned in Paris.

Even during quieter days, when the brash red headlines no longer scream from the page and pictures of atrocities are not to be found in the newspapers, the work of the ZAKA volunteers continues. This volunteer work is indeed sacred work, extremely difficult and demanding professional skills as well as much emotional strength, devotion and sensitivity.

ZAKA's sacred work is not subsidized by any official body, leaving ZAKA without any fixed income and reliant on the generosity and support of caring people.

As a purely voluntary organisation, ZAKA's very existence is based on this support and generosity. Not everyone is equipped with the emotional strength to deal with the difficult scenes and situations that ZAKA volunteers confront every day. Not all of us have that capability. But each and every one of us has the ability to be a partner in this sacred work. Your support and generosity will allow the blessed work of ZAKA to continue and, as a result, you will play your part in the important activities of the organisation.

We turn you to you, heart to heart, and invite you to be part of the great enterprise that is called ZAKA.

Yours sincerely
